IZAAK WALTON LEAGUE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR CANAL SHORES GOLF COURSE ECOLOGICAL PLAN
Evanston, July 20, 2017 – The Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association is pleased to announce that it has accepted a generous donation of $4,000 from The Izaak Walton League of America to support its efforts to develop and implement an Ecological Master Plan for Canal Shores Golf Course that will serve the course, and the community, into the future. The donation was made in a special presentation ceremony held at Canal Shores on July 18. Presenting the check to Association President Chris Carey was John Sundquist, president of the Frank Anetsberger Chapter of the League. The chapter, based in Northbrook, serves communities throughout the North Shore.
In accepting the donation, Chris Carey said, “This is a generous donation that will help us complete funding of the Ecological Master Plan. Our effort is to ensure the sustainability of the golf course, by preserving and enhancing natural habitats, and implementing best practices in golf course management to protect this important green space along the North Shore Channel.”
“This Ecology Grant is aligned with the goals and objectives of the Izaak Walton League. We look forward to working together with Canal Shores on future projects,” added John Sundquist.
The ecological plan is being overseen by a subcommittee of the Grounds Committee under the guidance of Planning Resources, Inc. of Wheaton. The subcommittee includes representatives from the community with expertise in environmental issues and programs. Increased community understanding about the ecological project has developed in the past year with broadening involvement and support from many and varied participants. The final plan will provide a guide for the preservation and protection of the natural habitat and help the golf course implement sustainable measures that will serve the needs of multiple and diverse stakeholders in the community into the future. The effort will provide for sustainable coastal and land use planning and habitat restoration. The plan is supported in part by a matching grant under the Coastal Zone Management Act, by NOAA’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management in conjunction with the Illinois Coastal Management Program, Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
About the Izaak Walton League
The Izaak Walton League was founded in 1922 to conserve outdoor America for future generations. The League’s 54 founders, who were avid anglers, named the organization after Izaak Walton, the 17th century author of The Compleat Angler, a classic book about the art and spirit of fishing. The League is one of the earliest conservation organizations to set an aggressive course to defend wild America by changing public policy. Almost every major, successful conservation program that America has in place today can be traced directly to a League activity or initiative. The League protects America’s outdoor through education, community-based conservation, and promoting outdoor recreation. Learn more at www.iwla.org. The Frank Anetsberger Chapter of the League is based in Northbrook and serves communities on the North Shore of Illinois.
