About

The ClubClub HistorySocialClub Sections

You will always receive a warm welcome at Old Fold – whether you are coming to play golf, hold a celebration or have a business meeting…

The club was founded in 1910. Since then it has entertained business leaders, celebrities, legendary golfers, and even royalty. Today, it continues to challenge – and charm – players of all standards.

Come and see why.

When Old Fold opened, life expectancy in England was 50. Women had no vote, there were 5 dollars to the pound, cigarettes were one old penny for 20, a pint was 1p, and the biggest single class of employment was domestic service – there were over 2 million butlers, footmen and maids, etc. That was 1910.

How things have changed. Including Old Fold…

Today, we’ve got members in their 70s playing twice a week, for example. And they love it because the course is so appealing and challenging. It was designed by the great Harry Colt. Since then it’s hosted national championships, and entertained royalty, entertainers and some of the world’s greatest golfers, including Sir Nick Faldo.

The club was founded by Viscount Enfield on historic land — the Battle of Barnet (a decisive conflict in the Wars of The Roses) is thought to have been fought on part of it in 1471. In 1558 Queen Elizabeth 1 stayed in the original manor house here. And we still have the moat, and part of a 1,000-year-old hedge.

There’s at least one relaxed social event every month where you can have a good time and meet new people in a very casual atmosphere. For example…

Quiz Nights

There’s a keenly contested Quiz Night on the last Thursday of every month. The ticket price includes a simple supper.

Friday Night Fish & Chips

Once a month, on a Friday evening, we host a Fish & Chip evening – feel free join us for traditional fish supper. Vegetarian option available.

Sunday Lunch

The first Sunday of every month, we will be serving lunch from 12-3pm. To book call the caterers on 020 8440 9185, option 5

Themed Supper Evenings

These are another great way to mix with other members. They are a big success so — keep an eye on the notice board to make sure you book in time.

Easygoing Formal Functions

As you’d expect, we also have some occasions that are more formal — Summer Ball, Christmas and New Year parties, for example, with live entertainment. But, while we might dress up a bit for these, you’ll find that they are still pretty laid-back. Again, be sure to book early because the tables tend to go very quickly.

Ladies Section

Ladies welcome from day one

When Old Fold was founded in 1910 it was both rare and forward-looking because – in a dominantly male world – it had a Ladies’ Section straight away; with 50 members. And women are as welcome now as they were then – especially juniors, as we continue to look to the future.

Today, as always, the Ladies’ section has players of all abilities so, you will be equally welcome even if you are a complete beginner.

If you are already experienced in the game, and you like a challenge, you’ll find plenty of competitions to enter throughout the season – both medal-play and Stableford. Plus, there are knock-out competitions for individuals and pairs – both Ladies only and mixed.

The Ladies’ Scratch Team plays in the Hertfordshire League. The Ladies also compete for the famous Pearson Trophy – and we have several other teams that represent the club in friendly matches.

Ladies are welcome to play at any time, subject to membership criteria. Tuesday morning is specifically reserved for Ladies’ play.

Seniors Section

You’re never too old

Old golfers never die. They don’t even fade away. The just join the TOFFS at Old Fold and keep on competing — well into their retirement years.

TOFFS is short for The Old Fold Fellowship of Seniors. It’s open to all male members over the age of 55, and it offers a marvellous opportunity for you to extend your competitive life by playing more than 30 matches, home and away, against many other clubs.

And the standard of performance remains high; our Senior Scratch Team has won the Hertfordshire League twice in recent years.

Our Seniors meet as a section twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to play in the Old Fold Roll up. The Roll Up is open to all members of the club irrespective of age or handicap and is a great way to get to meet other members.

They also have a calendar of club competitions and matches.

But the fundamental reason for the section is that word ‘fellowship’; our seniors are dedicated to friendship and camaraderie.

Juniors Section

Juniors have a ball

“I used to wake up every morning in the school holidays just looking forward to playing golf all day with my friends. You could always find a game, and you always had a laugh.”

Those are the words of a former junior member of Old Fold, and they are as true now as they were when he was a child.

That’s one of the great things about a golf club – it’s a safe haven where boys and girls can make new friends and have loads of innocent fun with them all day – and it’s certainly true of Old Fold.

Most importantly, our juniors are looked after and encouraged by dedicated Junior Golf Leaders. They have full use of the course and all the practice facilities. Our Head Professional and his team provide expert coaching to build the swings of future champions (many former juniors have gone on to win Club and County championships).

Old Fold promotes all local Junior Open golf tournaments, and we encourage all our eligible juniors to play in them.

Artisans

If you fancy competitive golf on a super course – and a friendly glass with a great bunch of people – come and join Old Fold Artisans…

Artisan golf was created in the 19th century to give working men the chance to play on good courses affordably. The first Artisan club was founded at the North Devon GC in 1888, under the auspices of the legendary J.H.Taylor, the 5-times Open Champion. He had once been a greenkeeper, and he promoted Artisan golf because he believed that:

“Everyone, regardless of financial standing, should have access to the game of golf”

Gradually, Artisan golf spread throughout the country – usually as a form of associate membership in existing golf clubs.

Typically, Artisans paid a low fee in return for helping to maintain the parent club’s course. This was the case at Old Fold, and it still is. Our Artisan Club was formed in 1946. The club gives us reserved weekday and weekend playing times, and we provide monthly work parties to assist the greens staff.

We play social golf on Tuesday and Friday evenings, and Medal and Stableford competitions at the weekends. We also play club and county knockout competitions and matches against other Artisan clubs throughout the season. We have an extremely hospitable ‘19th hole’, as well.

Will you fit in? Well, our membership covers all walks of life, from tradespeople to office staff, and everything in between. So, if you enjoy a game of golf and like to socialise with easy-going people, we’re sure you’ll feel at home.

If you currently play in a society or have the odd round with friends, but you’d like to find out about playing more often, in a club environment, contact our Hon.Sec., Rick Randall, on: 07769 049900 or email him at: freddiek26@hotmail.co.uk.

We’d love to hear from you.
